New Live Truck Policy

Recall that my chief photographer, Rick, knows about this site and has read it in the past. I'm guessing he's still reading, because we received a memo yesterday:

To: All Photographer's

From: Rick --------

RE: Live Truck Policy

I would like to remind all photographer's that it is against company policy to move the live truck with the mast up. If you need to move the truck after the mast has been raised, lower the mast first. It is dangerous to move the truck with teh mast up. Even if you have done it in the past, I do not want to hear about anyone else doing it.

The engineer's will soon install a cutoff system to kill the engine if the mast is up. Jake is working on the design now. Until the safety system is installed, do not drive with the mast up.

Remember, be safe out there. Look up and live.

So there you go. I figure some of you folks who commented on my live truck training would be happy for the update. I'll let you know when it's installed.

Way to go and ruin the fun for the rest of us!!

Nah sounds like a good "cover his a$$" memo for your CP.

But a good policy none the less.

Though a cut off does sound like a BAD idea. I have known them to break. Therefore stranding the live truck as the station since it can't start, and not at the live truck.

I think now that your chief has decided to beef things up you might want to push for a little real safety training as required by OSHA Regs [29 CFR 1910.333(c)(3)(i)(A)
When an unqualified person is working in an elevated position near overhead lines, the location shall be such that the person and the longest conductive object he or she may contact cannot come closer to any unguarded, energized overhead line than the following distances:

1910.333(c)(3)(i)(A)(1)
For voltages to ground 50kV or below - 10 feet (305 cm);

1910.333(c)(3)(i)(A)(2)
For voltages to ground over 50kV - 10 feet (305 cm) plus 4 inches (10 cm) for every 10kV over 50kV.

1910.333(c)(3)(iii)(A)
Any vehicle or mechanical equipment capable of having parts of its structure elevated near energized overhead lines shall be operated so that a clearance of 10 ft. (305 cm) is maintained. If the voltage is higher than 50kV, the clearance shall be increased 4 in. (10 cm) for every 10kV over that voltage. However, under any of the following conditions, the clearance may be reduced:

1910.333(c)(3)(iii)(A)(1)
If the vehicle is in transit with its structure lowered, the clearance may be reduced to 4 ft. (122 cm). If the voltage is higher than 50kV, the clearance shall be increased 4 in. (10 cm) for every 10 kV over that voltage.]

It is something you might want to think about.... let me know and I can send you some references to pass along to the chief. By the way, cut-outs that are simple work the best... but the resoning that they might break doesn't preclude their use....

What a moron. Citing OSHA regs isn't going to help. They are too hard for a simple minded photog to understand understand. Give him the electrified hot dog demo instead.

Actually, my training included the material in those OSHA regulations. We went over the fact that we're supposed to keep the truck at least 15 feet from power lines by law, and CP Rick said for our own purposes he didn't want us raising the mast within 20 feet of power lines just to give us a margin of safety.

I continue to be amazed at the irrelevance of some of the discussion, here and on the message boards. This didn't have anything to do with driving away with the mast up. It didn't have anything to do with not looking above the truck. In fact, the guy who moved the truck WAS looking up for obstructions and power lines.

The issue, plain and simple, was whether it was dangerous to tune the truck by slowly moving it. The question has been answered.

I know you guys are trying to be helpful, but some of you really need to learn to focus.

Boy, Max, you are certainly getting a case of yourself. You need to try to listen to people who have been doing this longer than you, rather than making smartass comments.
